Benefits Advocate Helps Man Navigate the System

For Ordell Dickerson, understanding and navigating the Social Security Administration (SSA) system was a daunting prospect. Previously denied Social Security Disability Income (SSDI), he turned to a Benefits Advocate at the Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL) for assistance with his appeal. The outcome would keep his life in tact.

“I needed help making sure that all of the paperwork was filled out completely and correctly and that I was presenting my strongest case,” said Ordell.

Home Sweet Home

RCIL shows the way to homeownership

People with disabilities interested in buying a home often find that income is an obstacle to achieving their goal. Yet if they hold an existing Rochester Housing Authority (RHA) Housing Choice rental voucher, they can benefit from RHA’s Section 8 Homeownership Program. RHA partners with the Regional Center for Independent Living (RCIL) to help potential homebuyers with disabilities access this program and realize their dream of homeownership.

Learning About the Career of Her Dreams...

For as long as Shayla can remember, she’s always wanted to be a therapeutic horseback instructor. The Ready to Achieve Mentoring Program (RAMP) arranged a job shadow experience for Shayla with Amy Jenkins, owner of the Meadows of Mendon Stable in Honeoye Falls, NY. It gave Shayla the opportunity to ask general questions about the stables and learn more about her chosen career.

“I had a ball, it was so much fun,” Shayla said. “I learned a lot about the job, and I still want to take the long journey and finish all the schooling needed to help me get there.”

RAMP’s main goal is to encourage youth to stay in school so they may pursue employment after graduation. Shayla did so well at the stable that she was invited back to complete her barn time when she is ready. Way to go, Shayla!
